Bilfinger and Gasunie enter into strategic 10 year framework contract
Industrial services provider Bilfinger was selected by Dutch energy network operator Gasunie as one of three exclusive contractor groups to enter into a strategic long-term partnership. On January 16, 2025, Bilfinger and Gasunie signed a 10-year framework agreement encompassing comprehensive services for the replacement, maintenance and expansion of the stations and installations in Gasunie’s transport network. The new agreement is part of Gasunie’s forward-looking Strategic Partnerships program and based on many years of successful collaboration in energy transition contexts with Bilfinger.
With their newly established Strategic Partnership program, Gasunie is answering to the industry’s shift towards more sustainable energy sources, particularly the transition from natural gas to new energies like hydrogen and biogas as well as the transport of CO2. Making their existing infrastructure future-proof includes both the maintenance of the existing gas transport network as well as the replacement and expansion of installations, where necessary. In addition, Gasunie is actively investing in the development of a new infrastructure for the storage and transport of renewable energies.
According to Gasunie CEO Willemien Terpstra, the contract thus reflects a new collaborative approach. The focus is, first and foremost, on strategic partnership, with an emphasis on openness and co-optimization. “We are, together, entering into a long-term partnership, one in which the focus is on safety, flexibility, efficiency and a more sustainable approach to projects in line with the changing market conditions. Maintaining safe and reliable energy infrastructure is a top priority. Additionally, we are developing new energy infrastructure, including for hydrogen transmission and the transport of CO2.”
Bilfinger enters into the newly awarded framework agreement as main contractor in cooperation with its partners BAM and Koninklijke Kuijpers. The latter complement Bilfinger’s broad management, engineering and maintenance capabilities in areas like piping & mechanical and electrical & instrumentation with their focus on civil work and building installations. Connecting the three companies’ complementary capabilities, they will provide Gasunie with holistic services as needed.
“We are excited to expand our successful collaboration with Gasunie by entering into a strategic partnership,” says Thierry Burki, President Engineering & Maintenance Belgium/Netherlands at Bilfinger. “By bundling the expertise and full range of services for both conventional energies as well as new energies at Bilfinger, we can provide our customer with comprehensive solutions. Aiding Gasunie on their journey to a more sustainable infrastructure represents the core of Bilfinger’s strategy to be customer’s No. 1 in enhancing efficiency and sustainability.”
In 2024, Gasunie and Bilfinger entered into a major 10 year framework contract covering a wide range of projects related to the energy transition, including comprehensive engineering services for new energy initiatives such as hydrogen transport as well as CO2 transport and storage.
