MHI Compressor delivers critical turbomachinery for Golden Triangle Polymers Company
Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Compressor International Corporation, a leader in the design and manufacturing of compressors, steam turbines and associated auxiliaries, has successfully manufactured, tested and shipped steam turbine driven compressor packages to Golden Triangle Polymers Company, a Chevron Phillips Chemical Company and QatarEnergy joint venture, for their world-scale 2,080 KTA ethane cracker located in Orange County, Texas.
The Golden Triangle Polymers project is an $8.5B integrated polymers facility consisting of both an ethane cracker and two polyethylene units located on 1,600 acres.
MHI Compressor’s equipment scope included the supply of three main compressor packages critical to the ethane cracker’s operation: cracked gas, propylene refrigerant and ethylene refrigerant compressors – all being driven by special purpose steam turbines. In addition, the supply included critical auxiliary equipment such as surface condensers, integrated turbine compressor controls and lube oil consoles. The scope encompassed a total of three API 612 steam turbines and four API 617 centrifugal compressors. Once in operation, the cracked gas compressor train will be one of the largest and highest horsepower trains in operation globally.
Clayton Jurica, vice president of sales, MCO-I, said, “Our relationship with both CPChem and QatarEnergy span 20+ years of successful equipment supply, as well as outage services at their existing operations. We’re thrilled that they’ve partnered together on this industry critical project on the US Gulf Coast. Over the last two years, the MHI team has been focused on the manufacturing and successful testing of our best-in-class turbomachinery in support of the joint venture’s growth project."
The compressors and steam turbines were manufactured and tested by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Compressor Corporation (MCO) at its factory in Hiroshima, Japan. MCO-I Houston is now providing installation services on site as well as engineering support during the current construction phase of the mega-project. The plant currently is planned for start-up in 2026.
