Meridian Energy say its Belfield refinery will be the cleanest ever built
The top executive for Meridian Energy Group said the refinery it is planning for Belfield will be the “cleanest refinery ever built” and answered environmentalists’ concerns about air quality. “Even the people at the park (Theodore Roosevelt National Park) will be surprised at what we end up with,” said Chairman and CEO William Prentice. Environmentalists had questioned the refinery’s location close to the national park.
Speaking at the Williston Basin Petroleum Conference, Prentice said fuels produced at the first phase of the refinery will be sold to regional markets, and can initially leave by rail. “Burlington (BNSF Railway) is starved for business and would be happy to be part of this,” he said.
Pipelines will also be designated for delivery from the initial phase which will produce 27,500 bpd. As soon as the air quality permit approved by the ND Dept. of Health, construction will be underway and the refinery will be able to start up within a year.
“By building the Davis Refinery close to the oil producers, Meridian can enter into long-term process tolling agreements with producers,” Prentice said, “and at the same time substantially reduces the refinery’s feedstock costs.”
The refinery will eventually be expanded to process 55,000 bpd and Meridian is partnering with BASIC Equipment of Houston for onsite fabrication.
