Tecnimont sign FEED contract for Al Sejeel Petrochemical complex
Under the patronage of His Excellency Dr. Mohammed bin Saleh Al-Sada, Minister of Energy and Industry, Qatar Petroleum (QP) and Qatar Petrochemical Company (QAPCO) have signed today the Front-End Engineering and Design (FEED) for the Al Sejeel Petrochemical Complex, which will be built in Ras Laffan Industrial City.
Today the signing of the FEED contract with Tecnimont SpA marks a strategic milestone for the progress of the mega-petrochemical complex, in which QP and QAPCO own respectively 80% and 20% equity interest. The project scheduled for completion in 2018, will feature one of the world’s largest mixed-feed steam crackers, and is designed to produce 2.2 million MTPA of polymers, including PE and PP resins.
H.E. Dr. Mohammed bin Saleh Al-Sada, Minister of Energy and Industry stressed that Al Sejeel Petrochemical Complex will strengthen Qatar’s position as a leading global petrochemical producer.
Dr. Al-Sada said “this project is aligned with the principles of the Qatar National Vision 2030, as launched and guided by His Highness Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, the Emir of the State of Qatar. We are committed -more than ever- to the accomplishment of our growth objectives, and to meeting our economic needs while safeguarding the requirements of future generations.” He said “today is a clear demonstration of such a commitment.”
“It is the vision of our leadership to harness the tremendous potential of the petrochemical sector, and to embark on a large-scale expansion of our downstream industry. To this end, we aim to raise our petrochemical output to 23 million MTPA by 2020, thus supporting the growth and diversification of the Qatari economy. This will increase the universal reach of value-added “Made in Qatar” product portfolio across the globe,” Dr. Al-Sada added.
Al Sejeel Petrochemical Complex will surely be unique in terms of its feedstock, as it will assure production efficiency and access to a steady supply of critical chemical building blocks while increasing its global competitiveness.
During the signature of the FEED contract Mr. Hamad Rashid Al Mohannadi, Chairman of QAPCO stated “We have witnessed the tremendous progress achieved by our petrochemical industry, resting on the capabilities and skills developed by local talent. Today, Qatari leadership is the driving force of Al Sejeel, which makes the project truly special as it is the first time that two Qatari companies will develop together a complex of this scale. Al Sejeel has become a national symbol and I take great pride in this groundbreaking achievement.”
Mr. Al Mohannadi continued, “Al Sejeel will also develop the talents of the future. This unprecedented complex will offer more than 1,500 career opportunities for talented young Qataris willing to participate in building a sustainable future for our nation.”
The plants will be processing several feed types simultaneously, namely ethane, butane, and naphtha, ensuring an optimum use of natural resources and allowing extra flexibility and diversity in terms of products.
Qatar was one of the first countries in the region to believe in the future of the petrochemical industry and decided to invest in the development of the sector back in the 1970s. Over the past 40 years, the country has been focusing on capacity building, developing local operational excellence as well as a pool of talents with strong expertize within the downstream sector, reinforcing the country’s competitive advantage on the global petrochemical scene.
Thanks to advancement in technologies and a focus on innovation, Al Sejeel Petrochemical Complex will be a sustainable project, limiting the impact of its operation on the environment.
To oversee and direct the advancement of the activities of the scheme, a Project Executive Committee (EXCOM) was formed consisting of representatives from both QP and QAPCO. The members of the EXCOM expressed their delight to have awarded the integrated FEED contract to Tecnimont, a world-class engineering and main contracting company with a proven track record and expect Tecnimont to deliver FEED work of the highest quality and standards in the industry.
On the occasion, Mr. Pierroberto Folgiero, CEO of Maire Tecnimont Group, commented: “We are truly honored to be awarded with this prestigious project which confirms the distinctiveness of Tecnimont long roots in the polyolefin sector. Our competence-driven strategy is remarkably focused on an early involvement in the investment initiative of our world class clients and we are really delighted to contribute with our FEED expertise to this visionary complex which constitutes a cornerstone in the Petrochemical industry with Qatari remarkable leadership. We will assure utmost commitment to the project and engage our best people for its brilliant success."
Tecnimont SpA is a leading global Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) Company that builds on 5 decades of expertise and benefits from a vast experience to execute large and complex projects worldwide, being in particular the market leader in polyolefin with about 30% of world installed capacity. Tecnimont SpA is part of the Maire Tecnimont Group. In Qatar Tecnimont has already experience as EPC contractor for petrochemicals.
Over the course of one year the project has achieved significant progress. Earlier this year, the technology selection agreements and the Project Management Contract (PMC) were also awarded, marking the firm progression of the project, as Al Sejeel is now entering phase IV.
The petrochemical complex will produce ethylene, high-density polyethylene (HDPE), linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE), polypropylene, butadiene and py-gasoline.
Finally, Mr. Al Mohannadi commented on the original name given to the project “In essence, Al Sejeel aims to connect our heritage with our future, while acknowledging the wonders held by the our soil. This is even reflected in its name as Al Sejeel refers to the hard rocks holding precious gas. The name highlights and pays a tribute to the rocky hard layers of the Qatari land, that have been holding for many years rich particles and valuable gas, becoming essential as strategic feedstock like ethane, critical for the petrochemical industry, and ensuring a sustainable outlook for the benefits of current and future Qatari generations. Al Sejeel alludes to the treasures held by our land, our legacy, that we have to preserve and optimize. “
As such, Al Sejeel Petrochemical Complex deserved a unique corporate identity that would reflect its aspirations and support its ambitions.
In addition to announcing the awarding of the FEED contract, His Excellency the Minister of Energy and Industry unveiled the official logo of Al Sejeel Petrochemical Complex. The logo is inspired by a chemical structure, paying a tribute to the essential feedstock, highlighting the science and chemistry orientation Al Sejeel, and overall maintaining a clear link with the core activities of the complex.
The innovative, differentiating and dynamic dimensions of the logo reflect the growth beyond boundaries potential of the project, underlining the ambitions of Al Sejeel. Blue and Maroon are the primary colors of the corporate identity, empowering the brand and reaffirming its Qatari identity, and aimed at sharing the Qatari national heritage with the world.
To complete the logo, the inspiring tagline “Simply Essential” was revealed, capturing the vital contribution of the project to building a sustainable future for the generations to come, while being committed to enriching the daily lives of millions of people on the planet through the innovative solutions produced.
