Haldor Topsoe signs hydrocracking contract with Eesti Energia Õlitööstus AS
Topsoe has signed a contract to deliver a tailor-made engineering hydrocracking process design, converting shale oil into ultra low sulfur diesel, meeting Euro V Diesel specifications.
An untraditional feed
The hydrocracking technology design is based on a complex composition of catalysts and process layout to treat a special and untraditional feed, with many different process challenges in form of high contents of arsenic, ash fines, organic chlorine, and oxygen species.
“Historically, shale oil has not been used as a source for motor fuel extensively. Now Topsoe's hydrocracking technologies and new design enable the conversion of shale oil into high value and high quality products, such as low sulfur diesel. We see that as a milestone within hydrocracking technology,” says Barry Cooper, Group Vice President, Refinery Business Unit, Haldor Topsoe.
Hydrocracking design
The hydrocracking design, Topsoe will deliver to Enefit, is the combined outcome of fundamental research, technology, catalysts, and of Topsoe’s experience from more than 100 licensed units within hydroprocessing and graded bed solutions used in well over 1,500 applications.
“We value the collaboration with Enefit and are pleased to contribute to one of the first hydrocracking units to upgrade shale oil to high quality diesel fuel and we look forward to seeing our catalyst and hydrocracking design play a role in increasing the security of Estonian fuel supply,” says Barry Cooper.
